The Red Bull Formula One (F1) team is using grid computing to boost development work for its 2008 racing car by getting the most out of its processing power.
With the constant need for more computing power, the team is using Platform Computing’s LSF system to take advantage of spare processing power across its network.
Check out this interesting article which is talking about how this F1 team is using grid technology (in this case Platform’s LSF system) as an aid to improve utilization of their computing power. It’s great to see people benefiting from the technology, and it illustrates how grid technologies can be an enabler to any business, whether it’s risk calculations, research or a way to get more from the computing power you have, a real enabler to your business.

http://www.bobsguide.com/guide/news/2008/Feb/25/Platform_Computing_Launches_Financial_Services_Solution_for_Cell-Based_IBM_BladeCenter.html
Platform Computing today announced Symphony for the IBM BladeCenter® with Cell Broadband Engine™ (Cell/B.E.) technology, a High Performance Computing (HPC) solution for financial services that delivers scalability and enhances performance of Platform Symphony. Platform Symphony is the only service-oriented software solution that supports the deployment of compute-intensive risk and analytical applications to this fast and powerful IBM server.
Symphony for the Cell/B.E. technology offers a reliable and scalable HPC infrastructure for performing lightening-fast, pre- and post-trade analytics, enabling the faster domination of liquidity. With Symphony for the Cell/B.E.-based IBM BladeCenter, traders can run portfolio simulations much faster – reducing time to results by up to 80 percent. In addition, this tightly integrated solution facilitates rapid and easy deployment of sophisticated analytical applications to mission-critical trading environments.
“This announcement is ground-breaking because these two innovative and powerful technologies have been combined into a solution that has immediate applicability in the banking and financial markets,” said Jingwen Wang, Vice President, Products, Platform Computing. “By leveraging Symphony, banking applications can get up-and-running on a Cell/B.E.-based IBM BladeCenter with minimal effort. Symphony’s policy engine rapidly enables the implementation enabling organizations to consider Cell/B.E. technology to accelerate a broader array of business requirements.”
Very cool, the IBM blade servers using the Cell BroadBand Engine processor could be a very powerful solution providing your application is optimized for the platform. Platform announcing a solution for this platform brings more opportunities for the Cell/B.E based blade solutions and the customer, very cool, I’ll need to check it out.

TORONTO, Dec. 18 — Platform Computing announced a partnership agreement with FedStage Systems for the distribution of FedStage’s Distributed Resource Management Application API (DRMAA) for Platform LSF. The FedStage DRMAA library for LSF is an open source implementation of the Open Grid Forum’s DRMAA 1.0 specification. Under the terms of the agreement, FedStage Systems will make the DRMAA library for LSF available under the Apache 2.0 open source license. Platform Computing will have the right to distribute and provide support for this library as part of the LSF family of products. With the integration of the DRMAA specification into LSF, customers and developers will be able to take full advantage of a standardized interface, making it quicker and easier for them to access and write applications for grid environments, at a lower cost and with reduced integration times.
Very cool, anything Platform can do to evolve their grid offering has to be a good thing for the users and the industry, I’ll need to read up more to see what benefits this will bring.

This solution drastically lowers the barrier to adoption of High Performance Computing (HPC) in the Financial Services Industry. Platform Symphony 4 is focused on delivering the software capabilities to financial organizations to rapidly and easily achieve application performance. In addition, Platform Symphony 4 is launching an online community giving developers free access to the Symphony Developer Edition with no restrictions and no time limits.
The Financial Services Industry uses HPC infrastructure software to allow them to develop and run mission critical compute and data intense applications across a grid. Platform Symphony 4 offers a powerful solution to easily develop and deploy service-oriented HPC applications that can run five to ten times faster than other solutions currently available. This environment supports the demanding requirements of key business processes such as intraday risk calculations, pre-trade pricing and end-of-day value at risk calculations.
Very cool, it will be interesting to see what new functionality this brings to the Platform HPC platform, it’s always great to see what the different vendors are offering and how that could be used in my business.
