Sainsbury’s has implemented datacentre management software as part of a plan to consolidate its servers.
The supermarket is using the Aperture Vista 500 system in its central datacentres as well as computer rooms at depots, in a bid to gain a better view of its hardware and systems and the space available. The company plans to redesign its datacentres and reduce its server numbers, to improve energy usage, cooling, storage and network efficiency. Sainbury’s has not set a timeframe or targets for its server consolidation programme at this stage.
I highlighted this article simply to talk about data center m anagement, both in terms of the cooling, the power etc, as well as the asset management. Understanding what you have, what it is doing, how it’s earning revenue or providing service, is the key to understanding how your IT operations are delivering to your business, or indeed not. That I can see an application view of the data center, how much back office or administration is using in the data center - can we make those non-revenue generating activites to be more IT, server, data center space/power more efficient? Do check it out.
