Cisco to make the data center part of its business

http://www.informationweek.com/news/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=201200843

Cisco Systems(CSCO) on Tuesday announced plans to make the data center a significant part of its business over the next 18 to 24 months. The plan includes new products and programs for building data centers using technologies that go beyond traditional networking.

In 2002, Cisco embarked on a data center strategy that involved providing local area network switches, network storage, and load balancers — all the components necessary to for connectivity services in a data center.

This week, Cisco unveiled a more ambitious strategy at its Networkers user conference in Anaheim, Calif. The networking giant wants to become the No. 1 infrastructure provider for data centers. Cisco envisions the network being at the forefront of a data center’s infrastructure, enabling any application, any content, in any location. It also sees virtualization as a key component of data center networks.

Very cool, anything that the vendors can do to show that energy efficiency, that good data center planning, design and management is not just good IT, it’s good business, it’s a great way of maximizing your investment, coupling the IT to be aligned to your business. By working to improve your data center, you can extend the life of your infrastructure and save money at the same time (admittedly maybe long term in some cases). Check it out an interesting read.

This year, the Networkers conference is part of a new event called Networkers at Cisco Live. Networkers at Cisco Live attracts thousands of IT professional and technical innovators who play a key role in purchasing decisions at their company or institution. It is an unparalleled opportunity to influence and interact with Cisco’s best customers, network and establish relationships with other Cisco partners, and learn about the latest developments and what’s on the horizon at Cisco, all in one forum.

Very cool, the information they have online for the event is simply stunning, there’s podcasts about the Green Data Center, How Virtualization can play it’s part in this, as well as some great key note speeches from John Chambers (CEO) and Jayshree Ullal (Senior Vice President).

I wish I’d been able to attend, but it clashed with our honeymoon. It looks like a great event, and very interesting, particularly John Chambers’ key note, as well as some great comments here: http://blogs.cisco.com/datacenter/2007/07/how_we_can_all_drive_data_cent.html about achieving a more energy efficient data center. There are set to be comments from Cisco’s partners which will also be very interesting to read.
