Armonk, N.Y., and Hannover, Germany – 11 Mar 2014: At the CeBIT exhibition in Hannover, IBM (NYSE: IBM) announced today that premium car manufacturer BMW Group is deploying IBM Big Data & Analytics technology to optimize products, repairs and maintenance. The use of predictive analytics helps to detect and fix vulnerabilities before new models are launched – and long before they might cause problems in series production.

The analyses include product and development data as well as warranty, diagnostics, and repair information that is gathered and evaluated worldwide.

With IBM Big Data & Analytics technology, the insights obtained from these large amounts of data can be incorporated into the product design and production process. Analyses that often used to take several months are available within a few days now, so that potential issues are detected and fixed swiftly to avoid recurring faults.

I’m genuinely excited about the possibilities of the next generation of ‘connected cars’ not only because of how we can leverage the data gathered for fault analysis, usage metrics and optimisation in design for future products. But it’s also with the new data analytics and the concept of the connected car we can remotely upgrade the software, the firmware and proactively address issues.

Additionally with Big Data analytics for the car manufacturers it’s being able to analyse patterns of behaviour, proactively identify and prevent issues, being able to identify a faulty batch of components that might be rectified by the dealer as part of planned maintenance rather than issue an expensive recall. Or identify which component is failing, whether consumer reports are a symptom of a bigger issue or a result of incorrect service plans or user behaviour.
