HP Discover day 1 – Keynote continued

Following on from Meg Whitman’s keynote speech was an introduction to John Hinshaw – Executive Vice President of Technology & Operations, John Herbert, from 20th Century Fox and Conservation International with an introduction from Harrison Ford.

John Hinshaw spoke about his background from Boeing amongst other enterprises and now runs IT for HP internally He spoke about some examples of what HP IT had done internally to prepare their company to grow for the New Style of IT, here’s the summary:

  • HP.com used to run on 10 full racks, using 10kw of power, it now runs on half a rack of HP Moonshot servers, using 1kw of power
  • Based on HP Moonshot migrations the IT teams think they can reduce further from 6 data centers to 4, (having consolidated from 85).
  • Switching to 3PAR has meant a 90% reduction in time to provision new storage and 36% reduction in floor space. Implementing HP
  • Networking means fewer outages, faster deployments and less people to maintain the network at a lower cost. Migration to HP Private Cloud, migrating 400 applications, provisioning reduced from 21 days to minutes.
  • HP Arcsight and Tipping Point for security, using HP Fortify for mobile application security

It was refreshing to hear how HP had leveraged some of their own technologies to create opportunities and reduce cost with real world examples and the context behind some of the past announcements.

Next on stage was John Herbert Executive Vice President and CIO, 20th Century Fox

The message was about how 20th Century Fox was leveraging IT to do more with less, that the ultimate lesson is in creating a simpler and more efficient environment. It was interesting to note the savings and empowerment gained from leveraging HP Moonshot for digital distribution, very cool.

Conservation International – with an introduction from Harrison Ford

Harrison Ford, Vice Chair of Conservation International spoke about the importance of forests on our environment, how significant they are to animal and plant species, to people’s livelihoods. That tropical forests are under threat, that it’s a necessity that we protect forests, we need forests, nature does not need us he highlights.

mission

Conservation International is using HP Vertica and HP Services to assist with their work in tropical forest analysis and reporting as part of the Team project. Conservation International has been making efforts to address measurement gaps in tropical forests with their networks in the Team project. They have deployed a global camera trap network to capture pictures in remote locations around the world so that they can measure change. The challenge before HP got involved was to process and analyse this data, this is now being done in near real time, which enables not only decisions to be made in the field, but also to empower the tracking of environmental security, to be able to contextualise the message for delivery to influencers and decision makers. In 2010, they lacked the data, in just one year as a result of this partnership with HP, not only have we got the data, we have the ability to analyse and report on it, with the results of the research being displayed on the Wildlife Picture Index (WPI) Analytics System.
