UK Govt adoption of cloud technologies continue

Adoption of cloud services by UK government bodies grew sharply in March, with sales through the public sector’s CloudStore portal during the month reaching more than half that of the entire year before.

Sales of services through the CloudStore, the online portal where IT buyers can access over 3,000 cloud services made available to UK government through the G-Cloud framework agreement, rose to £6.5m in March. The figure marks a significant increase in sales via the store: in the 12 months between the CloudStore being created and March 2013, about £11.7m of services were bought.

An interesting article talking about cloud technology adoption in the public sector space and there is also some interesting content about their CloudStore portal, very cool. It’s always interesting to see what the scenarios for cloud use are and to read about the barriers to adoption of CloudStore more amongst government departments.

Ultimately to reduce costs and complexity whether it’s in government, the enterprise or medium business we need to do the following:

  • Reduce range of platforms, vendors and operating systems available
  • Standardize on fewer middleware, database and application stacks – SQL/Oracle/Sybase for example
  • Switch to a commodity blueprint – fewer options, more Open Source, less integration and dependency on the OS stack
  • Preparation of application code for cloud environments based on deliverables in terms of security, availability and political/operational considerations
