84% of IT managers are yet to make the most of cloud computing

Abiquo survey reveals alarming statistics on lack of cloud strategy and integration

London, 18 March 2013: 84% of IT managers are yet to make the most of cloud technology, according to research by cloud software provider Abiquo. The survey highlights an alarming trend of IT managers failing to effectively adopt cloud services to improve business efficiency.

The survey carried out at Cloud Expo Europe reveals that 60% of IT managers feel their business’s IT strategy isn’t under control or providing what is needed. 57% of them said they have no defined cloud strategy to follow at all.

78% of businesses questioned do not manage their cloud technology from a single interface (instead using a convoluted cloud setup) and almost two-thirds said they aren’t automating the allocation of networking resources to efficiently fulfil cloud services. It was therefore unsurprising that 47% of businesses are making technology and cloud decisions without getting the IT department involved.

The cloud computing adoption debate, the ability for IT to consume cloud in a way that delivers savings and the desired agility or business benefit is an issue which is set to continue. This is due to a number of reasons which stem not only the enterprise technology teams, but those of the business as well. By that I mean, when adopting the cloud we need to switch mindset from one of management to consumption, to understand that if it’s agility, cost reduction and empowerment we want from the cloud solution, the normal rules of engagement need not apply.
Cloud computing offers some real cost savings and real opportunities for business empowerment, I get the on demand cloud bursting solutions, the development portal solutions or even the DR in a cloud solutions, but what we need is to map business applications with compliance, business risks and cost to income ratios, balancing what we do both internally and externally. When we say cloud strategy what we need is:

  • Are we doing cloud – if so for what applications and business cases – everything, our non core activities or the bits that work best in a cloud scenario
  • What rules do we use for engagement with the cloud – by this I mean how do we reset mentality from one of deployment to consumption – from what processor and disks does the cloud use to volumes or transactions per seconds, to application load and reliability metrics.
  • How are we dealing with non declared cloud solutions that we already have – an amnesty? Our own internal type cloud solution for stack (that is OS, middleware and database instances deployment and configuration)
  • We need to make our internal processes as simple and painless as those of our competitors – pay on use.
