Thursday – this means it’s server of the week

I first started this some time ago, you can read about it here.

Our server of the week is the HP Proliant ML110 G7.

It’s HP entry level tower server which is aimed at small businesses and users after their first server for running applications or storing their files, I recommended one to a colleague who was looking for a server to run a VMware lab (they specifically wanted an Intel powered server or I would have suggested the HP Proliant MicroServer), and following their feedback I bought one myself (the Pentium edition).

It’s a single socket 4u tower server, (about the same size as a tower pc in my eyes) but is much more scalable. The specifications are below:

  • Single socket with up to 2 or 4 cores depending on the processor (Celeron /Pentium / Xeon E3)
  • Up to 16GB RAM
  • Up to 8 hard drives
  • Two 1GB network ports (one of which can be set to operate as an ILO3 connection)
  • 4 PCIe Slots

Ideal use cases include:

  • Hosting applications such as Exchange/Microsoft Windows Small Business Server
  • Virtualization lab – this article has some hints on configuring the bios to do so
  • File server

You can see our flickr pictures here to see what you get in the box as well as the bios screen etc. I’ve got it running Windows Server 2008 Foundation edition quite happily. Adding an extra hard drive to it was quite simple, you remove the front and then plug it into the caddy, the server came with a keyboard and mouse so it was ready for me to load Windows on it out of the box.
