Remaining attached to my switches

An excellent article talking about CIOs being reluctant to migrate from their Cisco Catalyst switches which are now going out of support, something that I have been talking about with quite a few managers and Heads of IT, replacing a switch is not a difficult task in itself,  it’s all the organization and testing that needs to be done beforehand.  Also as one Head of IT mentioned to me, whenever the networks guys get new kit, I always seem to end up talking about ip address changes and new v-lans or something which causes me pain, making me even more reluctant to touch it, it works let me deal with other issues.

It’s not just serviceability though, we need to be thinking long term about upgradeability of the switches, energy efficiency and linking it into our next generation network and infrastructure plans. Just a few years ago, 100MB was seen as ‘standard’, as we migrate to 1GB, 10GB even being the norm, the backbone needs to be moving on to stay that little bit ahead of the mainstream to maintain opportunity and avoid us as a company being left behind.
