Using the HP MicroServer as a NAS solution

| June 24, 2012 | 0 Comments

I got asked the other day how I would configure a HP Proliant MicroServer to store filesĀ  for a small business client in a NAS type solution, simple I replied, download FreeNAS, put a bit more RAM in it and then add some drives, you’ll have it working in no time.

So what did we buy?

  • HP Proliant MicroServer
  • 3x500GB hard drives SATA hard drives – non hot plug in our case (MFG #458941-B21)
  • USB key – with FreeNAS on it.
  • 8GB Upgrade kit – 4GB is adequate, more memory improves performance (MFG #593923-B21)

You can use the on board USB port to host and run FreeNAS using a USB key, keeping everything tidy for deployment. I used this article which discusses how to put it all together.
