Computer Weekly

The US Department of Justice (DoJ) is to investigate whether exclusive distribution deals between mobile handset makers and network operators reduce competition and lead to higher prices for consumers.

The news came as Telefonica, the Spanish network operator, signed an exclusive deal to distribute the Palm Pre “iPhone killer” in Germany, Spain, the UK and Ireland.

Ofcom and the Office of Fair Trading, the two main regulators of the UK mobile sector, say no one in the UK has complained about exclusive deals.

It will be interesting to see what if any developments come from this announcement/investigation.

I love the comment “Ofcom and the Office of Fair Trading, the two main regulators of the UK mobile sector, say no one in the UK has complained about exclusive deals.” – Just ask anyone and you'll get one of two main responses to the question, got an iPhone yet?

I don't want to sign up to o2 – I'm happy with (insert T-mobile/Three/Vodafone or Orange to mention a few)

The tariffs are expensive and (or) you have to pay for the handset as well as some users complaining about signal

The main issue I have is the locking to networks, with a Nokia, Samsung or any other device I can buy it offline, plug it in to the network of choice and it will work.

With the iPhone I have to download a crack which may or may not invalidate my warranty and may at a later date stop working with any associated software updates. Have an exclusive deal, absolutely link user experience, user revenue to a network of choice, however release the phone for sale offline and separate the system software from the network, so that if I buy it offline it will work on any network without 'Jailbreak' or hacking it.
