Via for servers?

An interesting article talking about Via’s new chip and how it could be suitable for servers due to the energy efficiency of the processor. We’ll have to see, the more competition and innovation of the processor platforms, the more we can reduce the energy footprint and manage the need for performance, the more the end user can find the right processor for their needs, whether it’s a file server, or that stand alone server for that remote office.

AIC have released a 4u storage server which looks very cool. Providing energy efficient and affordable storage has to be a good thing for those seeking extra storage for their virtualization or other projects. The unit appears to offer significant savings as a result of its’ energy efficient power supplies. I’m off to read up more.

Microsoft have released some patches for Microsoft PowerPoint in regards to remote code execution, check if this is relevant to your infrastructure, if it’s in scope for applying to the desktop/server estate. Do remember that when logging a call to your support provider that they will require all patches and hot fixes are applied before escalating an issue.

Check out this article talking about PEER 1′s new data center in Toronto, it’s always great to read about or find about new data centers being brought online. It’s interesting to see that PEER 1 has joined The Green Grid, the more we talk about the issues, the more we can establish best practices, guidelines and standard around the data center, around IT, at the same time how we can manage and illustrate costs, savings illustrations or examples etc.

Check out this article talking about Google’s CO2 emissions in terms of their data centers and interestingly in terms of carrying out a google search. Do check it out. I wonder if we could see the same thing arise in the enterprise, could I ask a bank what the cost per FX currency transaction is?

It’s great to see Google talking about Green IT, the more we can discuss the Green IT issues, the best practice and ideas around this space, the better for the end user and vendor community alike. We need to know how we can make it relevant and most importantly make it work for your business be it an enterprise or a sole trader.

Rackable acquires SGI

Rackable has acquired SGI and is renaming itself SGI according to this press release. I wonder if we will see further innovation of SGI’s product range within the hpc arena as well as ongoing innovation of the ‘Rackable’ platform servers. An innovations or improvements in the blade/server space within the energy efficiency or scalability for virtualization would be welcome announcements, we’ll have to see what comes of this news.

Fujitsu have launched their new generation PRIMERGY BX900 blade server. It does look cool, it’s been designed on ‘four guiding principles’ in terms of power and cooling, operational performance, enhanced uptime and invesmtnet protection. Anything that Fujitsu and the other vendors can do to continue to innovate the blade platform, the possibilities with blade servers as a platform as well as the systems management and energy efficiency has to be a good thing. I’m off to check out more.
