There are a few ways to check if it’s installed and working correctly:

  • Check the HP quickspecs for your model, in google type the server name and quick specs, “DL380 G3 quickspecs” should indicate if your server shipped with integrated lights out or if you had to buy a separate RIB or RIB2 card.
    • The basic rule, anything G3 and above has an ILO (DL360/380/580), although the DL580G2 also had an ILO.
  • Right click my computer and go to the manage option, now click device manager, there should be an entry for multifunction adapters with an driver HP ILO Management Channel Interface adaptor.
  • Run the HP Diagnostics Online Edition for Windows – this should provide server information and allow you to run the diagnostics and verify the ILO.
  • Download and run the HPoncfg command, it will query the ILO for it’s configuration, verifying the drivers and it’s configuration.
  • Type http://theservername:2301 to run the HP web agents which will show you the server hardware and allow you to browse to see if you have an ILO.
  • Reboot the server and look for an F8 prompt where it says “Integrated Lights Out Advanced press F8 to configure”

I got an email from Shirley:

“How can I tell if my server hard drive is rebuilding or has finished rebuilding, we’ve just had the engineer swap a failed drive in our DL380?”

Great question Shirley, there are three main ways to do this easily.

  • Check the event logs, it should have entries like this
    • Drive removed – with some drive serial number and slot information: 72827373F4 removed from slot 0
    • Drive inserted – again with some serial number and slot information: 124847F89B inserted to stot 0.
    • Drive status change to (I think it’s 7 rebuilding).
    • Then a message saying drive status (with a number stating rebuilt)
  • Run the HP Array configuration utility – either remotely or by logging on to the server, it should show the status of the array or the drive rebuilding.
  • Look at the front of the server, the drive that’s been swapped should be flashing green to illustrate the drive rebuilding.

On the Dell/IBM or equivalent there are software equivalent tools which I will cover shortly to illustrate how to tell if a drive has been replaced successfully.
