SAN DIEGO, Dec 08, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Brickfish, the social media advertising network, and Microsoft have teamed up to add additional social media elements to its ‘I’m A PC’ campaign. Located at http://www.brickfish.com/microsoft, this program is an extension of the Microsoft Windows “Life Without Walls” campaign and invites people to submit photos or videos that express their individuality – and showcase how each person “is a PC” through photography, video, animation or other creative elements.

“‘I’m a PC’ is about celebrating the individuality within the global Windows community and the pride we all have in our own unique passions – and how technology can help us further these interests,” said Marty Collins, Microsoft group marketing manager for Windows. “We look forward to continuing this conversation with consumers through this viral effort that Brickfish has developed.”

I have mixed view points about this. Should the message about Windows not be about prurality, about the range of options you can have, about what people have achieved? I would love to know who the target market for this is? Is it power users/gamers? Is it the Apple community or brining people to the Internet using Windows? I commend the concept, we need though to move to a process of empowerment, it should not be what platform you use, it should be getting you online, shopping, using facebook and google.

The concept that Windows users are geeks, I don’t think is really that much of an issue, is it not that Apple is more a way of life, you purchase a mac, you use iTunes because it all works, in some respects I mean this in the positive sense, it’s a managed computer world. In the pc, on Windows is it not that you manage the computer, you define your destiny choose the open source office product, choose the sound card, change the system board, upgrade to that 512MB video card? You have in effect freedom, freedom to work and play as you choose on the hardware you want, with that comes responsibilities and opportunities. The mac on the other hand is more managed, to manage your expectations, to ensure it just works. How would you put this message across indeed would it be a message we want to debate, I don’t know, nonetheless I’ve had my say. Now time for work.
