IBM Blades rock – introducing my IBM HS20

IBM.com

The aim of the blog has always been to be as vendor neutral as possible, everyone gets a chance to get exposure of their products and services. I’ve been mindful about playing with and writing about IBM and Dell servers/blades (as well as other vendors) and have been saving up to achieve this.

I made a start last week, when I purchased my first IBM blade, it’s a HS20 8832L1X.

The first thing I’m working on is the ILO equivalent for IBM, the log in screen and basic functions which will follow, in the meantime some information on IBM blades and my new HS20!

For those of you not familiar with the IBM blade format, in the IBM world you have different blade chassis or enclosures which can support your different business need (telecoms/hpc/small business etc):

  • BladeCenter S – the small office and remote branch location – up to six blades
  • BladeCenter H – High perfomrance
  • BladeCenter E – Energy efficient
  • BladeCenter T – Ruggerdized
  • BladeCenter HT – Ruggerdized, high performance

There are a range of different blade platforms which are:

  • HS – Intel based blades – HS12/HS21/HS21 XM -extended memory edition
  • LS – AMD based blades – LS21/LS22/LS41/LS42
  • JS – Power based blades – JS12/JS21/JS22
  • QS – Cell/B.E Based blades – QS21/QS22
  • PN41 – the network deep packet inspection blade (network security)

I’ve purchased a used IBM HS20 (from a reseller on ebay). It’s the Intel derivative of IBM blade, it’s got two Intel Xeon 2.8GHz processors, 1GB RAM and an IDE disk. I love form factor of the blade, the service information on the back of the blade, and also the bit where I can write notes about it (user information).

I’m looking at a Dell blade and dependent on money and availability will be buying one of them to compare.

    Hi all,

I just had the same idea today. You can find really cheap IBM HS20s on eBay.

What I do not know is the following:
Is it absolutely required to have an enclosure/ chassis to power on the blade server. Or is there some kind of adapter or a kind of docking station available from IBM or a third party manufacturer for connecting a single blade. (I know this would be just for maintenance and would not provide cooling for example)

It would be great if somebody could provide some information on this.

    Kind regards,
    Ralf
