The National Bureau of Economic Research recently declared that the U.S. has been in a recession since December 2007. The news would be darkly amusing if it weren’t so utterly painful. But now that the recession is official, this seemed to be the ideal time to explore how virtualization and cloud computing can help recession-proof IT.
An interesting read talking about using virtualization technologies to be more efficient with your IT which is right. We need to combine a range of best practices and technologies to not only be more efficient with what we use, but be more efficient in what we do and what we ask of the technology. That’s not to say lowering standards, but more effectively defining what availability, what risk criteria we associate to that application, do we really need 24-7 at 99.999% availability for the corporate intranet, or is it more 95% available during 9-5? Remember the more available and resilient the business requirement, the more infrastructure and tools we will need to achieve this (application dependent).
