Learning to trust ‘IT’

We should be looking at virtualization of the server, the network and the storage to get the most from our infrastructure. Abstracting the elements of the infrastructure allows us to manage the infrastructure around the application, cope with short term spikes, be more energy efficient, more aligned to the business need. Convergence of the infrastructure elements with the application, allows us to provide IT as a service, scaled and configured in line with the business need using the right level of tools and infrastructure, that phonebook platform might need second response times 9-5, but not be required out of core hours, allowing us to allocate that power, cpu, and resources to the end of day batch, reporting and clearing applications.

We’ll see, there are so many opportunities, so many possibilities, the challenges going forward are non technical, are business and politics, based, I can get the technologies configured, can I get the buy in, the sign off and acceptance of a new way of doing IT, of doing business. Concepts of ownership, billing and managing expectations – in a virtualized IT environment what happens when I need more of something? In a physical world, I own it, I own the server, I buy more memory, more storage, what’s the SLA for turn around in a virtual world and who determines response times, batch times are acceptable – it requires trust for IT to get on with it, to be able to deliver IT, to maintain delivery and to bill accordingly.
