This could be seen as me being high maintenance and if this is something that you’re not interested in, I can only apologize. But it must be said.
What do you define as ‘unlimited internet’ ?
The reason for this is that I want to buy a shiny new Blackberry Storm.
It’s available on the Vodafone network here in the UK and it looks wonderful. I can have one tomorrow. But there is an issue. The unlimited internet is subject to a fair use policy.
At this point I seek to state that Vodafone is not doing anything wrong they publish the fair use policy on their adverts, this is an industry wide issue. (in the UK anyway excluding the iPhone).
Is unlimited internet with a fair use policy limit of so many hundred megabytes of data unlimited?
Apparently the ‘unlimited internet’ phrase is for an atypical user. Can we please therefore define an atypical user. I get a few hundred emails a day, I blog on the move, am I an atypical user?
Anyway, back to blogging.

We follow the Advertising Standards Authority guidelines for all our unlimited services. Basically this means that we can call a service unlimited”where a fair use policy applies, provided that we tell customers that a fair use policy exists for the service, and that we can demonstrate the threshold of the fair use policy is so high that it would only exclude “atypical users” ie people who have an unusually high rate of data consumption. This is industry practice and because the limits operators set for fair usage policies are so high, most customers will enjoy what feels like unlimited usage. Sadly there are a very few customers who do abuse the services, and having a fair use policy in place gives Vodafone, and all operators, and indeed our customers protection against this. Our research with customers shows that 500MB for mobile internet is rarely exceeded and we regularly review the way the internet and email is used to ensure the 500MB is still adequate. We train our retail advisors to explain this to you when you buy a phone for internet or email use. Also all of our adverts do have a note on them to detail what is included in the price plan and full terms and conditions are given to you when you buy and are also available online or on request. If you have trouble reading these terms and conditions we can of course send you them in another form such as large print, for more information just click here.
