Sun continues to innovate

September 22, 2008 – Sun has announced two powerful high-density, energy-efficient servers, each powered by up to four new Intel Xeon 7400 series 6-core processors: the 2U rackmount Sun Fire X4450 and the Sun Blade X6450. Both servers are ideal choices for Oracle and MySQL databases, high performance computing, datacenter virtualization and consolidation, and run a variety of operating systems, including the upcoming Solaris 10 6/08, the latest edition of the Solaris OS.

Sun Fire X4450 At-a-Glance

  • Industry’s first and only four-socket, 24-way, 2RU server
  • Half the size of other servers in its class
  • Supports up to eight SAS Disk Drives and 32 memory DIMMs
  • Energy-efficient design reduces power and cooling costs

I was on the Sun site today looking at their new Intel servers after having spoken to one of my architect friends who’s been looking at them for VMWare/xVM and SQL. I’m off to read up more. I love the specifications, I wonder what the environmentals are like.
