Geneva, 05 September, 2008 – HP today announced a web-based tool that enables mainframe customers to calculate, and identify areas for reducing total cost of ownership (TCO) by transitioning from costly mainframe environments to HP Integrity systems.

HP developed this easy-to-use tool to calculate infrastructure cost savings and flexibility that can be realized when moving off legacy environments, crucial to customers who want to modernize their data centers so that they can keep up with increasing business demands.

Interested customers can download the tool and take the HP TCO Challenge and receive a free personalized TCO report showing how much money could be saved when moving from a mainframe environment to HP Integrity.
A recent independent study by Alinean1, shows that customers who have moved to HP Integrity servers from a mainframe environment were able to achieve total cost savings of 70% over a 4-year period by significantly reducing their hardware and software licensing costs.

In addition to the cost savings, customers also benefit from the fact that the HP Integrity servers are open system platforms and so provide a future ready platform through their support of industry standard components from Intel combined with industry-leading application support on Windows and Linux operating systems.

Very cool, TCO continues to be a topic of debate, what is the total cost of the infrastructure, what savings could I leverage if I upgraded my server to model x, or switched platforms. Anything that can illustrate this is always welcome, you always have to appreciate that everyones’ set up, costs are different based on your system support agreements etc. But keep in mind, even migrating your legacy applications to supported open source or Windows servers can reduce your costs if done in the right way – you just have to value the cost of re-code, of porting the applications vs the investment cost – there will be the cases where the support/operations are basically fixed cost – I know it’s £3 million a year, but there are no surprises and it works, leave it be.
