LAS VEGAS — With LinuxWorld showcasing the popularity of the open source operating system, and with open source in general finding its legs in the enterprise, Bob Sutor, IBM’s vice president of open source and standards, made a slate of predictions for Linux and open source during his keynote address on Wednesday at the Black Hat conference.
Sutor spent time covering the past 10 years of IBM’s involvement with Linux and open source, but it is his predictions for the next decade that should be cause for discussion. (Hint: Post your reactions and predictions below.)
The development of open source has been exciting and refreshing to various platforms and businesses. It will be interesting to see how the demand for open source applications continues; more and more for some applications the actual operating system, interface is less important than that it works, that it’s affordable and delivers.
We need to be moving to a more what’s appropriate for the task way of provisioning IT to the end user, understanding that we can use a number of operating systems/platforms, that we might have VMWare for one user group, xVM for another, that we might use Linux on the thin client to provide our Windows applications in Citrix or Linux desktops for specific users/user groups.
