Hewlett-Packard Co. is supplying technology that will enable the Defense Information Systems Agency to give Defense Department agencies access to on-demand, pay-as-you-go computing.

The Palo Alto, Calif., company will provide the technology infrastructure needed to drive DISA’s Rapid Access Computing Environment (RACE). The new service launched this week.

More than a year ago, Hewlett-Packard, Apptis Inc., Sun Microsystems Inc. and Vion Corp. won contracts to provide on-demand processing power to DISA. In February, Vion won a separate contract to provide on-demand data storage.

The new RACE service is a continuation of HP’s work with DISA. The approach gives DISA customers a new way to pay for computing power.

It’s always interesting to see what developments there are both in terms of ‘pay as you go computing’ and ‘outsourcing. How different organizations and vendors are provisioning and paying for their IT. Do check out this article talking about a deal involving HP, very cool.
