SAN Francisco authorities are still locked out of the city’s official computer network four days after a disgruntled employee removed access for everyone but himself.

Computer engineer Terry Childs, 43, is being held on $US5 million ($5.1 million) bail after refusing to hand over the password to San Francisco’s FibreWAN system.

The network handles up to 60 per cent of the city’s government data such as emails, employee financial details, police documents and jail records.

Childs was arrested earlier this week after deleting all accounts with access to the system but his own.

Due diligence is something that is set to continue to be an issue in the physical and the virtual server management field. Managing access, which teams have access to which systems, how we determine what is within the scope of their role, indeed how we audit and log those power users to manage risk against maintaining people’s ability to do their job is always going to be a challenge.

Placing a focus on the technical and non-technical issues can be just as important – does the Windows server team need access to the ESX servers? Do they need access to the network or storage switches?

Think about the risks in your setup, your business, and how you can limit them within the way you do business, the way you supply and support the IT infrastructure.
