May 14, 2008 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — In April, SAVVIS (savvis.net) was listed among the top managed hosting providers for growth in the last 12 months despite the dipping economy in the US, according to Tier 1 research.

Confirming that growth trend, the company announced on Wednesday that it would open a new data center in London, responding to strong demand for more space, power and managed IT services in the UK.

The new facility in Slough, Berkshire is part of a $400 million global investment SAVVIS is making into new facilities and its network across Europe, Asia and North America over a two-year period. The company says it expects to open the new London data center during the early fourth quarter of 2008.

Very cool, the demand for data center power and space continues, SAVVIS is opening a new data center in response to this, it does sound cool. I wonder though, as the cost of the data center operations rises, at what point does it become cheaper to build and support the data center yourself? Where is the threshold? I’ll need to ask one of the data center guys I know.
