BEAVERTON, ORE. In February, a Green Grid consortium led by American Power Conversion Corp. Vice President John Tuccillo began raising questions about the efficiency and viability of using direct current (DC) power in the data center. Beaverton-based Green Grid brings together manufacturers with a stake in the data center to find industry-wide solutions to data center energy consumption. The consortium, led by Tuccillo, was formed to oversee a peer review of a 2007 study conducted by the government-funded Lawrence Berkeley Lab which promoted DC over alternating current (AC) power.

Green Grid reignited a debate that had cooled in recent by months by raising concerns over the study’s conclusions, noting that researchers may have compared old AC equipment to new DC equipment. While DC proponents complained Tuccillo, whose company sells AC equipment, should not have led the study, the results shed light on opportunities for gains in both AC and DC power, with the greatest long-term gains from DC.

I remember speaking with a data center guy who was very interested in DC power, the 20% power savings that people had mentioned was the main driver for this. This article talks about DC power. It will be interesting to see if it’s one of those things we use or something that’s deployed more by specific end user groups.  We’ll have to see, I suspect that if DC power is adopted, it’s done so with a range of activities to bring real benefit to data center energy efficiency, fresh air cooling, changing the temperature of the data center etc. Do check out the article.
