I just saw an interesting demonstration showing energy and utilization of the Intel powered HP servers. They had a DL580G4 and a DL580G5, and showed the difference in performance and energy utilization. The energy utlization of the newer processors was significantly less and took less time to process. With that in mind, upgrading your server estate could reduce your energy consumption and your hardware support contracts.
It’s going to depend on a number of things, so do look at the big picture, what you’re doing with the sever, the configurations in terms of cpu etc.
