It appears that my recent post, IBM announces the Z10: Is the mainframe still relevant?, must have touched on something that had an impact on quite a number of people. I received quite a number of messages from people who either thought that I was on to something or thought that I obviously was living near the beach in Florida rather than near the datacenters they knew. So, I thought I’d start collecting a list of requirements for that next generation datacenter that was based upon my warped views and some of the things that these folks told me. There’s a Talkback button over to the left, add your views if you’d like. No, no, don’t hold back. We’re all friends here.
Check out this interesting post talking about tomorrow’s data center, it’s always interesting to see what people think. I wonder if we wont in future be thinking of the data center more in terms of Cisco’s ideas. By that I mean thinking of the data center as the service, as we abstract the IT infrastructure from the end user, wouldn’t it be great if we could get to the position where we failover data centers, not individual components of the IT infrastructure. That New York can run London’s IT, that Singapore can run New York’s IT, that in essence my computing power, my infrastructure can follow the sun, that I can say “We need to do security patching of the London systems, can we get the application teams to failover to New York whilst we do it?”
What will tomorrow’s data center be? Well I suspect there will be a focus on energy efficiency, using grid or virtualization technology, I wonder if we might see more fresh air cooling or a data center that doesn’t run so cool?
