Novell Inc. has agreed to acquire server virtualization management tools provider PlateSpin for $205 million in cash. According to executives, the deal will give Novell customers access to technology that enables heterogeneous physical and virtual server management and optimization.

he acquisition is a “huge step forward” for Waltham, Mass.-based Novell, said the vendor’s president and CEO Ron Hovsepian in a conference call. The deal will enable Novell customers to evolve to the “next-generation data centre,” which, according to Hovsepian, is “not about tearing out everything and replacing it; it’s about leveraging it and extending your IT investment to make it more interoperable, or, simply said, to make IT work together.” In next-generation data centres, workloads, disaster recovery and applications are able to work in a flexible and agile way, he added. “With our own and now PlateSpin’s technologies, we can provide customers with the ability to offer a complete lifecycle management and optimization of workloads for Linux, Unix and Windows operating systems, and we can do this across both the physical and virtual infrastructures.”

Very cool, I wonder what new innovations this will bring to the market place, we’ll have to see. Check it out.
