The Swiss National Grid Association (SwiNG) has now fully committed to start its work as Switzerland’s national grid initiative. It will allow scientific applications to access state-of-the-art computing resources and high-performance clusters by connecting Switzerland’s leading academic and research institutions.
Grid computing provides transparent access to computing, storage and other resources for scientific, engineering and commercial applications and users. It can therefore be considered as the next step after the Web. Switzerland has strong research groups in several fields of distributed and high-performance computing, and has started to accumulate efforts to create a grid infrastructure that could be used to support science and industry within national borders. In 2006, a consortium of universities and research centers kick-started a national grid effort that aimed to building a Swiss grid infrastructure with a truly heterogeneous set of resource providers.
This effort has led to the birth of the Swiss National Grid association (SwiNG, www.swing-grid.ch/) in October 2007. Today, this association counts among its member institutions almost all Swiss academic institutes.
Check out this article which is talking about the Swiss National Grid Association. It’s an interesting read and highlights how grid technologies can be used as a real enabler to your business or research processing needs.
