How to reboot the HP ILO/kick off a hung session

I got a question by email:

Is there a way to ‘reset the ILO?’ I’ve had times when the ILO thinks someone’s logged in, or when it’s not quite behaving?

Great question, check you’ve got the latest firmware, this resolves several known issues. Anyway, the easiest way to reset the ILO, as in ‘reboot’ the card is to to the ILO settings tab, go to networks and press apply. The ILO will then set the network settings and reboot it. After about 40 seconds the ILO should be ready to use.

If this doesn’t work you can always try re-applying the firmware to the ILO.

    That was the only way to reset the older ILOs, but the newer ILO2 with the latest firmware gives you a couple more options. First it’s important to remember that rebooting the ILO does not impact the running server. So you don’t have to worry about creating an unplanned outage.

    To reboot the entire ILO, select the System Status tab, then diagnostics from the left column. At the bottom of the page, there’s a button to reset the ILO.

    If you just need to gain control of a remote console session, you can enable Remote Console Acquire. This option is available on the Remote Console tab by selecting Settings in the left column. Next time the ILO console session is in use when you try to connect, and Remote Console Acquire is enabled, you’ll see two buttons Cancel and Acquire.

    There’s a bunch of other cool options available in Remote Console – Settings, some require an additional license. There’s a link to download a trial license under Administration – Licensing.

    Hi,
    I’ve encountered a similar problem on my old compaq dl360 g2 server.
    That one has older version ilo which doesn’t have any button to reset the ilo on the bottom of the screen at the Systems Status tab.
    Acquire was also not working as it was just saying that it might took long, but it did not recovered my remcons.
    I couldn’t find any proper solution for this problem but I’ve found a workaround way to restart the ilo.

    At the Administration tab there is a menu called Network Settings.
    Since normally if you change something with the networking, the ilo will reset itself to boot up again with the new settings. So I’ve just simply pressed the Apply button on the bottom of the screen without actually changing anything and that still rebooted the ilo on my server, and when it came back on, I was able to use remcons again.

    Thanks a bunch for your help on this, because I had totally forgot how to do it. Once I made the change, I was able to successfully “acquire” the session. Thanks for your help.

    ILO (Integrated Lights-Out 2) on HP Server
    to connect in ssh (or in telnet) to do it.
    One connect give this commands:
    cd /Map1
    reset

    Here an example:

    User:admin logged-in to ILOGB87451B7E(10.1.1.15)
    iLO 2 Advanced 1.81 at 11:05:47 Jan 15 2010
    Server Name: myserver.mydomain.com
    Server Power: On

    hpiLO-> cd /Map1
    status=0
    status_tag=COMMAND COMPLETED

    /Map1

    hpiLO-> reset
    status=0
    status_tag=COMMAND COMPLETED
    Resetting iLO.
