I was speaking with Chris he’s been building some IBM blades down in the Docklands in London for the bank he works in. He was having problems with a few faulty blades and was saying that he wished he could just quickly read bullet points on how to replace some of the base components on the blade servers – what he could get away with without calling a hardware engineer – reset the bios, reseat the drive, that kind of thing. In reference to that, I’ve done some quick wins for the BL30p blade server that I’ve got. Please note that the HP BL35p blades are very similar thus the instructions should work just as well.

Please ensure that you follow best practice in terms of protecting the device from anti static damage, consult the manufacturer documentation, consider any impact on your warranty and if in doubt always consult your hardware support team first. (That was my liability bit – apologies.)

Anyway, I did my own little video (AVI file) about replacing the hard drive in the blade which you can watch (and hear my voice), I did it using our trusted digital camera – (it’s my first attempt), if you have any feedback do email me. A few notes, the hard drive in the video does not have the original HP screws in it which hold the drive in place – it was for the video only.

  1. Unscrew the screw which holds the cage in place to the blade enclosure
  2. Remove the IDE cable which connects the hard drive to the IDE connector/system board
  3. Gently and slowly remove the drive cage
  4. Now unscrew the screw on your left, which holds on the top cover
  5. Remove the top cover to access the drive(s)

If you’re only having one hard drive in the blade consider placing that drive in the bottom slot of the drive bay as this will be more secure.
