Taking another leap in offering simplified IT infrastructure solutions for the emerging businesses in India, HCL Infosystems Ltd, last week launched its next-generation ‘HCL- Datacenter in a Box’.

The ICT system integrator and distribution company said this new solution offers Simplified IT Infrastructure with power-packed Blade Servers in one system that Integrates storage, computing and networking. It is said to be not only easy to deploy, maintain and upgrade but is also cost effective.

The HCL-Datacenter in Box comes equipped with six hot-swap compute blades, based on latest 45 nm Intel Quad Core Xeon 5400 Series processors, delivering performance necessary for all business-critical applications. Delivering HCL’s promise of simplicity and ease of management of IT infrastructure, the new server also features simplified management through a GUI interface, Integrated 2 TB SAN storage and expansion options.

Very cool, I still think the data center in a box idea has great potential and could be a great way of solving those short term compute needs for those enterprise customers or in the field where you need to rapidly deploy capacity on demand.

Interestingly though, I still wonder if these kind of things (whether it’s the HCL, Rackable or Sun derivative) wouldn’t be THE tool for virtualization for the enterprise in the Windows/Linux world? Think about it, turn up, plug it in, virtualize all your development servers over a few weekends, remove the old servers, plug in the number of ESX hosts you need and virtualize back from your mobile data center. Great for all those sites where we’re at or approaching the red level of data center capacity, where we need to actively decommission before implementing a large scale virtualization solution.

It is HCL Server 6U / Tower server not a sun derivative. It supports virtualization and the beauty is GUI based Mgmt software which is click and configure. Ideal for any emerging enterprise
