One of the largest and most powerful computers in the country has been unveiled in Edinburgh.
Hector (High End Computing Terascale Resources) is capable of 63 million million calculations a second and is four times faster than its predecessor.

It represents the equivalent of approximately 12,000 desktop systems.

The £113m project will run for six years and will enable scientists to develop life-saving drugs and model climate change and epidemic patterns.

Very cool, the article highlights how these high performance/grid type compute solutions can be a real enabler whether it’s in terms of a medical research application or for financial analytics.

The article below contains a lot more information including the hardware involved:

“HECToR is the UK’s new high-end computing resource, funded by the Research Councils and available for researchers at UK universities.”

Interestingly, it uses AMD Opteron processors each at 2.8GHz with 6GB of RAM, the article mentions that the system is based on 1416 compute blades with 4 dual core socket processors. Very cool, do check it out, it’s an interesting read, the cray site www.cray.com has some more information.
