Virtualization and thin client is the way forward

I listened to a user story at today’s Global Action Plan Inefficient Truth research report announcement. It was from Sean Whetstone of Reed Managed Services, the recruitment company, and the raw statistics blew my mind. See if they do yours as well.

Sean Whetstone is the company’s head of IT Services. He said it ran more than several hundred servers in two datacentres: One in Bracknell; the other on the 4th floor of Reed’s London HQ. The fourth floor datacentre was getting full up, running out of power and its maximum floor loading was becoming an issue. There were issues at the Bracknell datacentre too. Server utilisation was appallingly bad; I think 7 percent was mentioned.

So Reed went for VMware to virtualise servers and Citrix to run thin clients and remove desktop PCs. The results were spectacular.

Very cool, check out this article showing how virtualization coupled with thin client brought real benefits to this business – it’s great to see people benefiting from the technology.
