Blade servers have been around for many years, so it was mildly surprising that IBM chose to feature them as the “next big thing†in hardware technology at a recent briefing for industry analysts. Despite being late to the party, the case for blades that IBM executives made was quite convincing. You don’t have to rely on our interpretation, however, because the presentation was video taped and can be seen on IBM’s own web site. Just click on the opening screen below to see what I mean.
Check this post out, it’s talking about blades being the next big thing. It’s a conversation I hear and talk about regularly with colleagues. There remains the concerns with the technology – the concerns about heat, about consolidating the infrastructure – can they really be that good at virtualization. As with any technology, individual users will need to realize the benefits for themselves before some will appreciate the blade message. For the meantime, blades like a rackmount can be a great business enabler, but they have to be deployed in the right way, with the right software and management tools to ensure you get the maximum business benefit. Switching to blades wont help with your existing problems, but deploying a consolidation or virtualization solution based on blade technologies might.
