Moving services into an off-site data centre was part of an IT revamp that has saved Edinburgh Council £4 million in direct IT costs.
The overhaul of the council’s information and communications technology (ICT) has made it more efficient and has allowed staff to work remotely and in better collaboration with each other.
As part of the revamp the 26 directories that stored details have been consolidated in to a single entity, thus facilitating communications.
Laptops and desktops were standardised and servers were consolidated, allowing staff to work equally from any terminal across council offices as all employees are now using a common platform.
Very cool, the council have appeared to use the data center revamp as an opportunity to improve the way it uses the IT, to get the full benefit of the data center move, sounds very interesting and a great way of maximizing the business benefit.
