The demand for Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) hard disk drives continues to pick up steam, fueling predictions by Gartner Inc. that 21 million 3 Gbps SAS drives will ship during 2008, nearly double the 12 million expected to ship this year.

The Dataquest Inc. report said users are turning to the new technology as its performance levels skyrocket — the Gartner research unit said it expects the 3 Gbps speed limit today to grow to 6 Gbps by the end of 2008.

Interesting, the new SAS disks are very cool, and I suspect demand for them is set to continue, but as we move to SAN boot, SAN storage solutions particularly with virtualization, will the SAS disks be for set markets/purposes? We’ll see, in many respects there will be those systems where virtualization, where SAN storage might not be efficient, and in the small/medium enterprise market, SAN storage might not be the way forward particularly in terms of costs..
