Bracknell, UK, 5 June, 2007 – A study conducted by market research firm Dynamic Markets has today revealed that technology is still not being seen as a strategic tool by UK mid-sized organisations and is simply being used in an ad hoc way to support the business.

• With nearly one third (28%) of business managers stating that there is no IT strategy within their organisation;

• another third (29%) admitting to working to an informal loose plan and;

• the final third (34%) just buying systems as they need them, it is little wonder that 35% of respondents said that their business growth was putting pressure on their existing IT infrastructure.

In the small business it’s relatively easy to manage the IT, I can simply have one person responsible for it all, have the support done by the supplier, for example buy the Dell pcs over 3 years with 3yr warranties and software support for example. The concept of change management might not be that appropriate particularly if I rely on Windows Update, Symantec LiveUpdate and Office for my IT.

As we scale up though, to the 300 users, the multiple email server with backup policies, maybe some kind of storage system, and the odd in-house written application – how do you manage the IT – service delivery?

Check out the article its’ very good, but consider the size of your business, how you could get the best from your IT, what the cost of supporting it internally is against the cost of buying the service in, and work out what will work best for you.
