1. Reinventing Waste – Several of the best ideas from the event centered around reinventing the idea of what we call “waste†and considering it more in terms of “byproducts.†This idea was echoed through a discussion of heat and power and the insight that the amount of heat generated through transport in the UK is nearly equivalent to the amount of heat required to supply for current demand. The challenge is how to get it from one place to the other.
Check out this post by the greenagenda blog, its very interesting and covers how business needs to address the climate issue, also that its not just the big things that can make a difference, the little things if done by enough people can make a big change – switching off the tv/pc at night, switching off the corporate screensaver could all make a difference in volume and wouldn’t take much to achieve/cause much disruption.
It also mentions how BT is suggesting other ways to deal with the energy in the datacenter, I know the guys at DCMI when I speak to them are still talking about DC, fresh air cooling and my favourite one, raising the temperature of the data center from 20 or so degrees C to 25, it can save tremendous cost in air conditioning and if done in the right way need not cause disruption to your datacenters/server infrastructure operation – but might mean a re-negotiation of your support contracts…
