I was on one of the carbon footprint calculators the other day working out my carbon footprint and what it would cost to remove my carbon footprint, it’s amazing I press a button and it all goes away apparently via offsetting it.

Anyway, if you do the calculator there are several, one I used was erasemyfootprint.com, the biggest part of it is my electricity and gas, the car (I do about 4000 miles a year) isn’t that bad, the train to work is half my electricity and totals 8.7 tonnes roughly.

I can offset this by paying the £130 which goes to environmental projects or planting tress on this site, it gives me some ideas to reduce my carbon footprint but should it not mention the following as a consumer that I can do today at no cost to reduce the pc energy?

  • Switch off the screensaver – this can use extra power as I’ve posted before
  • Switch the pc off at the plug – don’t let it go standby
  • Switch off the peripherals – the printer doesn’t need to be on does it?

Also could it not mention tranquil pc/Dell/Apple’s Mac Mini (which someone said they’re going to delete)

Looking at my chart I need to reduce my electricity usage, so I’ll take the following steps:

  • Switch off my tv and wireless broadband at night
  • I’ll consider a mac mini instead of my olden days G5
  • I already use the magic energy efficient light bulbs

What’s your master plan for energy efficiency/carbon neutrality?
