Anyone got some data center power I can borrow - no pressure

Jeff told me that some of his customers in London have heard anecdotal reports that the National Grid in the UK is either unable or unwilling to provide the additional physical infrastructure required to support the concentration of power demand coming from the burgeoning financial center in the city. Short of ripping out and starting over, the National Grid may be stuck advising its customers to be happy with the power they got (despite ominous blackouts).

Check out this blog, it’s very cool, and this post is about data center capacity in the city which remains a topic of debate despite new data centers coming online like the one from EasySpace.

I’ve heard similar things, it’s not just a supply issue, its also one of redundancy and cost, powering a data center these days is expensive and constitutes a significant part of your overall IT costs, finding a building that’s in the right kind of location with decent transport and telecoms links as well as power is the problem. More so the telecoms, I can build a data center in Scotland and host everything there, but my telecoms links might be very expensive, I might not pay ‘per mile’ but it certainly seems that way when I get the quotations.

The latest data center hot spot seems to be in Croydon where many investment banks and a couple of telecoms companies have obtained space in a co-location solution, Croydon’s ok in terms of transport and telecoms, but once that facility is full, it will be interesting to see where we head, there is space in the city, but what about my bcp? I can’t have BCP too close to my ‘live production’ data center.
