Severn Trent Water has started the procurement process to outsource its IT data centre and support services.

The water company wants to appoint a number of suppliers to provide data centre operations for some 120 company sites and 6,500 users, as well as associated support for the next seven years.

More and more companies are seeing the benefits of outsourcing the data center, it seems that this water company is doing the same thing. The only thing you’ve got to watch with this is the cost, one of the guys at DCMI was telling me that the cost now adays of leasing a large data center can be the same as buying it long term, in which case (in the UK anyway), do you lease your space, or buy it and get the tax write off over so many years, and then own it, behave how you want with it – remember edge living in the data center is fine when you own it, you have the control, an external vendor might only let you do that for a few weeks or even days, maybe not at all. Consider this before you sign that dotted line for more space. Granted not everyone’s in the data center business, I’m not saying an investment bank should build data centers, but it might be advantageous to do the maths and work out what’s right for your business long term…
