Larry Dignan of ZDNet blogged about the sad state of corporate IT. He mentioned a speech from Gartner analyst, Steve Prentice:

“This industry is in danger of becoming one of failure. We’ve come to accept mediocrity as the norm. It’s not a lack of technology or skills. The problem comes down to a lack of vision.”

An excellent post and some good responses. Is the problem here not accountability and process? I can get you a server ordered, racked, built and deployed, but if I used your process, the sign off system, the work-flow it would take months, get my Visa, order it, phone up the data center guys, the networks and windows guys directly and it can be done in days. It’s all a process thing, coupled with people working within that process, that I have a day to install windows, means I’ll take the day, yes IT needs to deliver, but the budget stuff needs to be dealt with, all to often things come down to budgets – “sorry there’s no budget…”
