A couple of years after co-managing the IONA IPO in 1997, one of the company founders, Annrai O’Toole, tipped us off that a little company called VMware had some “wicked cool†technology we should pay attention to. We were in the running to be a co-manager for its original planned IPO, no doubt proposing some valuation in excess of $1B. After the market collapse the company was acquired by EMC in early 2004 for $635M.
An interesting article talking about virtualization and VMWare, do check it out. The problems most people have had with virtualization were non-technical, that said some standards, some best practices in the virtualization field especially in the ‘boring business process field’ I think would be in great demand. Just how do you patch 1200 virtual machines? What’s the build process for a virtual machine? How do you cross charge a virtual machine? A virtual GB of disk or memory?
