Dell makes the laptop solid state powered

http://www.toptechnews.com/story.xhtml?story_id=122009T6ZX5C

Dell has introduced a 32-GB Flash memory based solid state hard drive for two of its notebook computers.

Buyers will have the option of replacing the mechanical hard drive with a $549 Flash unit for the Latitude D420 ultra-mobile and Latitude ATG D620 semi-rugged notebooks.

The disks are currently available in the US and are scheduled for availability in Europe and Asia within a few weeks.

Very cool, these disks should be more energy efficient, and more reliable than the current physical drives, interestingly, I wonder where we are with getting the same kind of drives/solution on blades? I know IBM are kind of there, but can I not have the same drives instead of the SAS ones?

Apperently SSDs are going to be more expensive than HDDs for some time to come. According to this http://www.engadget.com/2007/04/25/ssd-prices-in-freefall-wont-overtake-hard-disks-anytime-soon/

  • Excellent point sir, the solid state drives are about 300 or so dollars more tend to be about 30gb and therefore the disk as it currently stands will be around for a while. However, keep in mind all the corporate users with notebooks that have windows, office av and thats about it, switching to solid state drives could reduce your support costs and make it a lot easier. At the moment the barriers to entry are size and cost, 30gb isn’t small but not exactly large either your 8gb ipod nano, windows xp, office could easily half that…
