From the previous post, windows is cdrom is in the drive.
Power up the box with the windows cd.
Dos windows nt part of the install
Let the server boot of the windows nt cdom rom, when you see the message ‘configuring windows’, start pressing the f6 key and keep doing so until the screen turns blue and shows the insert driver disk message appears – we basically have to ensure that windows stops setup, loads the driver and continues with the driver loaded else the setup will fail as it’s missing the driver.
Press S ensuring the driver disk is in the floppy drive, press enter, select the driver you want in this case its compaq drive array for windows nt
Windows now copies the driver into memory, and continues, loading the normal drivers as well
Windows setup screen now loads
Enter to run setup
Press enter again confirming that you’re loading the compaq drive array driver
A message will probably appear about cylinders, press enter, it’s fine
Read the license agreement, pressing page down and then f8 to agree
The summary screen appears, I’ve set my keyboard to british and pressed enter to continue
Now the drive appears on screen, it reads 8gb, but can only create a 4044mb partition, that’s fine, press enter
Format the drive ntfs
Select or change your path then press enter
Do I want a check disk to run, fine, enter
Setup now runs and copies files
NT setup copies the files, then asks you to remove the cdrom and floppy disks, it then reboots a few times and converts the new drive to ntfs then runs
Windows nt setup part
NT prompts for the cdrom, put in the cdrom wait and press enter
Click next, and enter company name, and username
Select the licensing type
Enter servername I’m calling it Gerald
Enter password
Choose to create a recovery disk – no don’t need it for this test
Select the components needed
Now we do the network install.
Wired network screen appears, click next
Select if you want IIS – I don’t so untick the box
Install driver, click have disk and I put in my driver disk
Select protocol, I select TCP/IP and untick the other one
Select services, I’m adding SNMP and Simple TCP/IP services also network monitor agent
You’ve finished, click next.
Setup now runs and completes and reboots
Install SP6
Insert your windows nt4 service pack cdrom
Run service pack 6 update.exe to install the service pack and restart the server
Install drivers
Insert your Compaq Smartstart 5.5 cdrom
Go to: cdrom drive (d:)
d:\cpqsupsw\ntscprun bp000096.cmd – this installs all compaq drivers for nt4
Or run the setup, but the cmd file’s really quick
The bp000098 runs and calls a command prompt to install each component, each component will run, then the dos window closes, when it does, reboot the server.

Hi Henry,
The drivers for the Compaq Proliant 1600R are here: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=uk&prodNameId=257741&prodTypeId=15351&prodSeriesId=254906&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=24#113214
You want the one which is named Compaq Drive Array Driver for Windows NT 4.0, which I believe is CPQ1586.exe on the smartstart 5.5 cd.
The array controller driver is here:
