I’ve taken some pictures of the server, highlighting the different components for your review, check it out, the smartstart process is below.

These notes outline installing windows nt4 on a Compaq Proliant 1600R, and are done on the basis that you have first performed a system erase using the Compaq/HP system erase utility on the smartstart cd 5.5 or downloaded from the hp site.

Perform a system erase, the smartstart will then reset the settings to default and ask you to power cycle the server.
Power the server off
Power the server on
On first boot, the server will display two errors then reboot, the errors as follows:
162 – System options not set
1785 – drive array not configured
The system will do some things, then reboot
On second boot, the two same errors will appear, smartstart then runs a hardware detection and runs smartstart
Smartstart loads
Click to select your language
Click to select your country and keyboard
Set the date and time, press next
Click to confirm settings
Read and accept the license agreement
(I’m going to perform a manual setup)
Select your operating system, in my case Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 and press next
Smartstart then asks would you like to modify any settings, in this case no, so I press enter to continue
Smartstart then runs the array configuration utility
Welcome screen appears, press next
Select the RAID configuration you want, RAID1,5, custom, in this case I’ve got 3×4.3gb disks, so RAID5 will do
Configuration preview screen appears to allow you to change anything, using this screen you can configure the partitions at the array if you wish
Configuration is now finished click save configuration, then click done, the menu will close, now select controller and press enter.
Smartstart now reboots a few times and creates the diagnostic partition, ignore any messages it will handle it all – if it fails I tend to start again, but it is up to you
You’ll then get a screen saying smartstart is now complete, click next, it will ask for the windows cd, insert the windows cd and click continue, now your set to install windows.
