Madison, Wis. – State Senator Robert Cowles admitted his crystal ball may be a little cloudy, but he hopes the worst news about the state of Wisconsin’s information technology woes may have already trickled out in anticipation of the Legislative Audit Bureau’s pending report.
Ted Kanavas, his Senate colleague and a software executive, isn`t sure the worst news is behind us.
What they both agree on is that the audit on state IT projects should be a catalyst for change.
An interesting article, it highlights a few things, that effective planning to an IT solution is crucial, that IT needs to be more accountable in the systems it deploys. It’s a double edged sword, IT need to deploy things properly, that what is implemented works and meets/exceeds expectations, at the same time the business/users need to be prepared to pay for the investment, use the new technology and not say “I don’t like it, it’s rubbish next”, the UK has had particular problems with the NHS IT system deployments, but I suspect that too much was trying to be attempted in too short a time, people don’t like change, and it’s the end user which rules yes or no to the success of your project. Yes the infrastructure might be on, the lights on, but if nobody’s using it, it’s a mute point.
