Customers say they will vote with their feet and pull out of Orcon’s datacentre on Auckland’s North Shore following a major outage last Monday.

Andrew Thompson, of Auckland-based software developer TVD, says his company has had enough after the outage. Slamming the redundancy arrangements as “pathetic” and questioning why there is only a single power feed to the Northcote datacentre, Thompson says his company lost tens of thousands of dollars as a result of the failure.

There are two main points of view. From the customer point of view this is unacceptable, keeping the datacenter online is crucial to my business, is part of due diligence and service delivery. Although at the same time, business must minimize their risk, putting all your servers in one place, without disaster recovery, exposes you to the possibility of a single point of failure.

Yes the datacenter provider should ensure all the contingents are in place, but as in the case above, supose they aren’t what are your plans for business? Something to think about with co-location or internal hosting activities.
