DataSynapse Goes Virtual
February 27, 2007
By Paul ShreadDon’t go searching under “grid computing” if you’re looking for the latest news from DataSynapse.
That’s because the grid computing pioneer  and possibly the fastest-growing grid vendor  is no longer using the term in its news releases, preferring instead to lump its products under the broader term “virtualization.”
The move comes as 451 Group analysts predict that the term “grid computing” could be dropped by vendors in favor of “virtualization.”
DataSynapse hasn’t used the term “grid computing” in a press release since November. Recent releases such as a partnership announcement with OpTier have focused on virtualization instead.
The article is right, now that virtualization of the infrastructure is becoming the norm, the next step is virtualization of the application. Interestingly, we’ve seen the infrastructure hardware become more of a commodity, the famous phrase ‘tin’, does this mean that the application code is the next commodity item? In reality, once I can put my virtualize my application, it’s location and infrastructure independent, wherever it’s cheapest/easiest, is where it will be held? Will I look at application development and support being outsourced?
